NON-CLUB EVENTS & OPPORTUNITIES

We are always on the lookout for events that are photographically interesting. If you know of any upcoming festivals, fairs, dedications, historical commemorations, bird migrations, civic events, etc., please bring them to the attention of members of the Executive Committee.

Events with enough member interest have the potential to become a formal club Shoot Out.

Madelon Powers Gallery to Present A Deeper River: Photography by Susie Forrester

East Stroudsburg University’s Madelon Powers Gallery will present A Deeper River from Wednesday, February 5 – Thursday, March 6. The exhibit will feature photographic works by Susie Forrester.

Hours for the gallery, located in the university’s Fine and Performing Arts Building, Normal and Marguerite streets, are Monday – Friday, 11 a.m. – 4 p.m.  A reception for the artist will be held on Wednesday, February 12 from 4-6 p.m. in the gallery. Both the exhibits and reception are open to the public at no cost.

Susie Forrester’s “A Deeper River” reflects a lifetime of dedication to capturing the beauty, resilience, and complexity of the world through her lens. With 40 years of photography, her work evokes an emotional connection to the natural world, human stories, and the interplay of light and shadow. Unlike many photographers who use the camera as a buffer, Forrester wields it as a link to foster relationships with her subjects. Whether capturing a portrait, a landscape, or a man-made object, her lens is an invitation to walk through a threshold and participate in what is here and what is beyond here, connecting us all.

In addition to Forrester’s work, the gallery’s mezzanine will feature a special exhibition of student photography, curated by Dr. Yi-Hui Huang, professor of art + media + design.

Tobyhanna Ice Harvest at Millpond

Saturday, January 25, 2025

9:00 am to approximately 2:00 pm

2071 Lakeside Dr, Tobyhanna, PA

This event is free and open to the public

This event is dependent on the weather. Get event updates on their Facebook page.

The Annual Tobyhanna Millpond #1 Ice Harvest is planned for Saturday, January 25, 2025, from approximately 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM, provided we have sufficient ice. Come out and see how ice was harvested over a century ago. All are welcome to help cut ice, guide the ice cakes to the icehouse, and store the ice in the icehouse.

As of late December, we have about 3 inches of ice on the millpond, but with the weather forecast for a cold January, there is a good possibility that we can harvest ice this January! For the past two years, the ice was too thin for harvesting. Last winter, in late January, we had only three inches of ice, and the previous year, the ice was barely one inch thick on the harvest date. The ice had been 10 inches thick in late December that year, but it completely melted in less than a week. On the other hand, during the winter of 2021/22, the lake did not freeze over until January 3rd, and we had 16 inches of ice for the harvest later in January.

This free event is organized by the Leonard/Saxe families with financial support from the Coolbaugh Township Historical Association.

Check the Ice Harvest Hotline at 570-894-8205 for updates on ice conditions. We will provide another email update as the harvest date approaches.
