Congratulations Gina Matarzzo
Gina Matarazzo took home "Best in Show 2024" at the Gurwin Jewish Rehabilitation annual photo contest.
Some words from Gina on this accomplishment:
This recognition is not just a personal achievement; it signifies the profound impact that art can have on our community, particularly in the realms of art therapy and memory care.
The Gurwin Jewish Nursing & Rehabilitation Center is a place where creativity and healing intersect. Each year, the photo contest invites talented photographers to showcase their work, with the winning pieces being displayed throughout the Gurwin buildings. These images play a vital role in our art therapy programs and memory care initiatives, providing comfort, inspiration, and connection for residents and patients alike. It’s heartening to know that my photograph will contribute to this enriching environment, fostering joy and evoking memories for those who experience it.
During the awards presentation, I had the privilege of hearing from Tony Lopez, the esteemed judge, who shed light on what made my photo stand out. He spoke about the patience and timing that went into capturing the perfect moment — not just the striking placement of the seagull soaring above, but also how the waves framed the scene. His insights reminded me of the dedication and care that goes into both photography and the therapeutic processes at Gurwin. Just as it took time and skill to compose this image, the same can be said for the work done by our art therapists and caregivers, who patiently nurture the creative spirits of our residents.
Photography, much like art therapy, is about capturing moments and emotions, and I hope my winning photo resonates with others as much as it does with me. It serves as a reminder that beauty exists in the simplest of moments, whether it’s a bird gliding over the waves or a resident engaging in creative expression.
I am deeply grateful to Gurwin for this opportunity and to everyone involved in the contest. Together, we are not just showcasing art; we are creating a tapestry of shared experiences that can uplift and heal. I can’t wait to see how my photograph, along with others from this year’s contest, will enhance the spaces within Gurwin and bring joy to the lives of those who call it home. Thank you for celebrating art and its power to connect us all!
