SHOOT OUTS & WORKSHOPS

The Pocono Photo Club hosts various Shoot Outs and Workshops to get members out of their comfort zones, learn or improve upon particular skills and interact with fellow club members. Shoot Outs are free to all members and Workshops have a nominal fee.

SHOOT OUT POLICY

Shoot Outs are informal “meet-ups” and are not an “official” club activity (such as our monthly meetings) organized by PPC. Participants assume any and all liability that might or may be connected with their participation in a Shoot Out.

We will have the opportunity to photograph this facility nestled in the Pocono Mountains.
And maybe have a glass of wine or Two.

Also, on this date will be the third annual Blues festival from noon - 6:00 p.m.

This month’s Shoot Out will be held at the Electric City Trolly Museum in Scranton PA. The Museum is filled with history, memorabilia and artifacts from Scranton’s glory days. From tickets to trolleys, you’ll find a number of interesting items to photograph. There is also a trolley ride available which winds its way through Scranton with a number of interesting stops to photograph from the trolley along the way (There is a fee for this activity but the museum is free). Steamtown and The Electric City Aquarium are also nearby. Flash, Mono and Tripods are allowed in the museum.

Rail Gap Pocono Creek Hike

The preserve has an interesting mix of nature as well as old artifacts like an old car and farm equipment, and old wooden water tower.

America on Wheels is an over-the-road transportation museum in Allentown Pa..

The 43,000 square feet museum offers over 23,000 square feet of exhibit space divided into three main galleries and several smaller exhibits. The museum houses rotating exhibits on the second floor. Also on the second floor is the HubCap Cafe, and a vehicle art gallery featuring the work of artists.

The museum's collection features over 75 bicycles, motorcycles, automobiles and trucks in exhibits telling the story of people and products on the move from the days of the carriage to the vehicles of tomorrow.

The museum also houses the archives of Mack Trucks.

HISTORY:

As early as 1989, Allentown city officials had announced plans to revitalize an old industrial area, which included the abandoned Arbogast and Bastin meat packing plant, along the Leigh River. This redevelopment, which was to be known as "Lehigh Landing," was to include a museum, a brewery, walking trails, a footbridge across the river, and a promenade for festivals. Development was hindered by fundraising problems, environmental remediation issues, and even a national debate on pork barrel government spending. After three separate groundbreakings (2001, 2004 and 2005), the museum, which cost over $17 million to build, was officially opened to the public on April 12, 2008

Even if we cannot cut ice at the 30th Annual Ice Harvest on January 28th, we welcome all visitors to come and hear about the ice harvest industry and see our extensive collection of ice harvesting tools and equipment. It’s a great opportunity for the family to enjoy the outdoors while learning about the local ice harvest history, and it’s free!

Trexler Nature Preserve

General Harry C. Trexler (1854-1933) contributed a great deal to the growth and quality of life in the Lehigh County. General Trexler purchased 1,108 acres, in Lowhill and North Whitehall Townships to create a game preserve to protect bison, elk, and white-tailed deer. In 1933, General Trexler gave the land to Lehigh County in his will and it became the Trexler-Lehigh County Game Preserve.

A century after the land was purchased, the Trexler Nature Preserve continues General Trexler’s legacy and vision. A 2006 Master Site Plan outlined a vision to carry the preserve into its second century. Lehigh County partnered with the Wildlands Conservancy, the Trexler Trust, the state and community groups to transform the Master Site Plan visions into reality.

Today, the Trexler Nature Preserve offers residents opportunities to explore and experience nature as General Trexler envisioned. The hills offer spectacular views of the Lehigh Valley. Eighteen miles of trails offer wildlife observation, bird watching, hiking, walking, horseback riding, and mountain biking opportunities for enthusiasts at all levels. The ADA trail provides access to the disabled and the Jordan Creek is a venue for fishing and picnics.

Trexler Nature Preserve offers something for everyone!

Trexler Preserve

Once we park we will be along the Jordon Creek. There are several nice hiking trails near by, most are easy to moderate. The cover bridge trail take you to the Geiger Covered Bridge which is about 0.6 miles away. Once Back at the parking lot, we can drive over the river and follow Elk Ridge Road through the park. There are several great scenic pull offs and opportunities to see elk, buffalo, and other wildlife.

Take directions to the Leigh Valley Zoo. Once at the zoo, turn hard right and follow to bottom of the hill. Not sure of road name, however, follow the signs for Elk Ridge Trail or Covered Bridge Trails. Just before the river, turn left onto Elk Ridge trail. Parking is along the river.

Zimmermann Farm Estate Shootout

Zimmermann Farm, the historic farm estate of acclaimed artist and metalworker Marie Zimmermann (1879-1972), sits perched above the wild and scenic Delaware River in the DEWA National Recreation Area. Built in 1912, the stone mansion of Marie’s design was the country getaway of the Brooklyn based Zimmermann family and eventually the full-time home of the artist and her partner Ruth Allen. Hike theTwo Ponds Trail (1.4 miles)

Come out and join your fellow PPC members atPocono Environmental Education Center

The Pocono Environmental Education Center (PEEC) is located within the 77,000 acre Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area and is the education partner of the National Park Service in this area.PEEC offers six trails that vary in distance and difficulty. All trails are loops that begin and end on the PEEC Campus.

We will concentrate our time at Two Ponds Trail that is 1.4 mile, easy level trail. We will view towering pine plantations and scenic pond environments. We will watch for various bird and wildlife encounters along this trail. And did I say Mushrooms? Hopefully, we will have many Shroom encounters!

Club members will have the opportunity to be guided by a PEEC trail expert explaining about the wildlife environment. The event will happen on Saturday, July 23 and we will meet at 8:30 at the Welcome Center. Cost for the event will be $5.00 per member.

We highly recommend after the guided tour that members take advantage of one or more of the other 5 trails.

Fossil Trail- Pass a wetland area and descend into a beautiful, mature hardwood ravine. After crossing a small stream, the trail climbs back up the ravine. Watch for the fossil outcrop sign.

Ridgeline Trail- a more difficult trail and only the experienced should try.Walk through expansive oak-hickory forests, shady hemlock ravines, and wetland areas.

Scenic Gorge Trail-Experience an open hardwood forest ecosystem & a dark, cool hemlock canopy along Spackman's Creek.

Tumbling Waters Trail-Enjoy the beautiful overlook of the Delaware Valley & the Kittatinny Mountains in New Jersey, then take a series of switchbacks down to the waterfalls.Climb back up the switchbacks to continue on the main trail, which quickly ascends Killer Hill.

Fireworks show at Skytop Lodge

July 3rd, 2022 at 6:00 pm

Come and join us for a night of fireworks at Skytop Lodge. We will meet at 6:00 p.m at the front porch of the lodge. We will be going over techniques on how to photograph fireworks to prepare us for the main event. Fireworks begin at dusk (about 8:36 pm).

This event is open to the public with limited parking until 8:45pm. Parking is only $10 per car for non-resort guests. Arrive early and enjoy live entertainment beginning at 6:30 pm. Concession stand items and cash bar available.

Gouldsboro, Lehigh Township In the very southwestern tip of Wayne County is a town once known as Sand Cut. During the 1840s and 1850s the Delaware, Lackawanna, and Western Railroad built their line through the area and opened up a large tract of virgin hemlock. In 1856, twenty-year-old Jay Gould, infamous financier, built America's largest tannery here. This became the start of his vast fortune and the town was renamed Gouldsboro.

The DL&W constructed a train station. which carried freight from Hoboken to Buffalo, and ran passenger trains until 1950. The Lackawanna County Rail Authority is the present owner of this station, which in 1960 became part of the Erie Lackawanna and in 1970 part of the Conrail System.

Three years ago the Gouldsboro Area Foundation began to restore the very dilapidated building. The group of local citizens have replaced the station's roof, replaced sections of the Dutch wooden siding, and some of the vertical siding. They have, with the help of crews from the Wayne County Prison, repainted the old station in historically accurate colors, replaced over forty windows, and created replica gold lettered signs. Every detail has been carefully researched.

Bill's Old Bike Barn is FAR more than motorcycles. In the BOBB, you will find appliances that you grew up with. You will most probably see your first camera model in the "Camera Store". Cars, toys, traditional shops and many, many unusual items. See the link to Bill's Old Bike Barn below to get a better idea of this amazing place. It is a drab metal prefab building on the outside and it is fantasy within!

February Theme(s) of the Month

Beginning in February, the club will be introducing new methods to feature our members and their photos, temporarily replacing “The Photographer of the Month.” To begin this process, we have selected a “Theme of the Month” concept. For February, the photographic themes chosen are “Hearts and Flowers,” and “Winter Landscapes.” You are encouraged to photograph any object that depicts the named themes. Be as creative as possible with your choice of objects to photograph, or in post processing; or simply photograph traditional heart and flower designs and typical winter outdoor scenes.

Submit your entries, up to five photos, no later than February 8, 2022 to the drop box provided. Your photos will be featured at the February club meeting on Tuesday February 15, 2022. Let’s calm the cold winter month of February with all the beauty that winter scenes often provide, and warm our own hearts with the seasonal images you capture through your lens.

Note: This event is very weather dependent. To much snow or not enough ice will cause the event to be cancelled. We will announce any changes to the status of this event as it is released.

Caution: By the nature of this event, the area can be very slippery. The event provided strap on ice cleats at the last event. If you have crampons or other traction devices for your shoes, please take them with you.

Jan. 21st Facebook Update: "Conditions are looking pretty good, friends. We will post a notice on Sunday after we check the ice, snow and weather conditions. If all is good, we'll harvest next Saturday, 1/29 from 9 am 'til about 2 pm. Check back in a couple days!"

The natural ice industry had been an important local industry around the turn of the last century. Tobyhanna Millpond #1 is one of the many lakes in the Poconos that were used for the ice industry. Before the days of electric refrigerators, iceboxes were common in households and they were cooled with a block of natural ice. Tobyhanna Millpond #1 was originally dammed for the logging industry in the 1850s and after the area was timbered off, the Pocono Mountain Ice Company built a 60,000-ton capacity icehouse near the lake in 1907. That icehouse was 500 feet long and 100 feet wide, made of hemlock lumber, and had sawdust in the walls for insulation. Ice was transported by railcars throughout the summer to New York City and Philadelphia, and the local iceman delivered a block of ice for household iceboxes. The original Tobyhanna Millpond #1 icehouse burned down in 1939.

There is also a restored Boston & Maine Boxcar, built by Western Steel and Foundry in 1908 near the icehouse. The wooden boxcar is painted to replicate an ice car that would have been used to ship the natural ice to New York and Philadelphia. Today, the boxcar is used to store the authentic equipment and memorabilia used by ice harvesters.

The ice harvest is organized by the family of the late Thelma and Bill Leonard Sr. from Tobyhanna and the Coolbaugh Township Historical Association. The event is held on the last Saturday in January each year and gets underway around 9:00 am and lasts until the icehouse is full, usually around 2 or 3 pm. The public is invited to come help cut ice, move the ice cakes to the icehouse, or see a demonstration of ice harvesting with the actual tools and equipment used at the turn of the century. October Virtual Shoot Out

October's virtual shoot out features a b-O-naza of the letter that starts off the month. As always the way you approach this theme is up to you. You can go literal and find them in print, or you can be on the look-out for "organic" Os that pop up in nature. And how you present the final product is also up to you. Will you go for one that's straight out of the camera or have some fun and post-process it?

The Bridges of Easton Canal Walk

Join Sam Prynda at one of his favorite photo sites along the Lehigh River on the Rails N trails in the beautiful town of Easton. There are several train and highway bridges, the old Easton Train station, the Canal Park, waterfalls on the Leigh, old Canal Locks, and the Rails n Trail itself.

The canal was part of an entire system which linked up with the Delaware Canal and Morris Canal giving boaters access to both Philadelphia and New York. Vital to the transport of anthracite coal and the rise of the anthracite iron industry, the Lehigh Canal was in full operation until 1932 and in partial operation for 10 more years until it was finally closed. It was restored in 1976. The trail which runs along the canal is an easy walk and the sites range from ruins of old industrial buildings to a few surprises from nature.

The trails are very easy, flat and wide. Hope to see everyone there!

The Rail Gap Nature Preserve is home to a beautiful natural trout stream, Hemlock groves and wetlands that support frogs, salamanders and more. Matt Schultz of the Pocono Heritage Land Trust will be our guide pointing out both the natural wonders of this 61.5 acre preserve as well as some of the man-made points of interest like the remnants of the Wilkes-Barre and Eastern Railroad which operated from 1893 all the way into the early 1930's. This month our virtual shoot out explores the world you see when you glance out the window. It's up to you as to whether or not you'll include your window or step outside and take the shot from your window's vantage point. What do you see as you look around? It can be an object, a view, or a living creature- the choice is yours. And so is the option of using post processing or taking the shot straight out of the camera. So bring us on a photographic tour of your backyard or neighborhood. We're looking forward to seeing what you see!

Summer is full of color no matter where you look so for this month's virtual shoot out, we're going to capture that color with our cameras. As with all our virtual shoot outs, the time, date and subject matter are all in your hands. Shoot to your heart's content and then select 3 to 5 photos to share with the club.

The NJ Track Cars
are coming to
Dansbury Park and Depot!

Dansbury Depot is quiet today, but on August 28th the air will be filled with excitement when the NJ Track Cars pull into town. They may look like a car, but they're designed to roll along the tracks just like a train. It's not too often we see these unique vehicles come through East Stroudsburg so the opportunity to photograph them is special. The track cars are expected to arrive around 11 AM and will stay for about an hour and a half. Along with the "Track Train" there'll be an assortment of vendors selling their wares in the park and the Depot as well as the Old Tower will be open to public view. Laurinda Faye's WWII exhibit will be up in the Depot as well as the PPC mobile display. You'll also have a chance to check out the time capsule contents before they return to ground for another 50 years. Mark your calendars now so that you don't miss out on this special day!

High Key Lighting
It's time to explore a new technique as our virtual Shoot Out returns this July. High Key lighting can be used in a number of genres and on a wide variety of subjects. Will you test it out on a landscape, a cup, or even a person? Stretch your wings and let your creative juices flow. High key images are those which have little or no shadow and are usually quite bright. Summer is the perfect season to get outdoors and capture a scene using it. Or if you prefer staying inside where it's cool, why not try it out on something indoors using a flashlight or ambient lighting that comes in through the window. Grab a chair, your camera and a spoon and join us for East Stroudsburg's 150th Anniversary Celebration Ice Cream social. It promises to be an entertaining event with live music from the King, Elvis impersonator Kevin Macintire, and 150th Anniversary specialties by Jimmy's Ice Cream and Fruity Bowls. Local artists and the Time Capsule contents will also be on display. This shoot out will take place at the Dansbury Depot Stage next to the railroad tracks.

It'll be an afternoon of good old fashioned fun, great shots and did we mention the ice cream???!!!

Cresco Train Station Shoot Out

Please join us at the historic Cresco Train station for a day of going back into history!

The Delaware, Lackawanna, and Western Railroad first came through Cresco in 1851. The peak use of the Cresco Station can be categorized into two periods: the Freight Period from 1851 to circa 1900, and the Passenger Period from 1900 to the 1950’s. During the first period, goods such as hatchery fish, ice, railroad ties, railroad spikes, mining timber, and sprags were shipped. Hides were delivered by rail to the tanneries and sent to market as leather.
Passenger traffic peaked during the 1930's and 1940's when people from cities made the Poconos one of their desired tourist destinations. Later, with the increase in popularity of winter sports, tourism in the winter also began to rise. At its busiest, the Cresco Station witnessed over 1,000 passengers arriving in a single day.

150th Anniversary Music On Mondays!

MUSIC ON MONDAYS is back for the Summer of 2021! Join us for the first show of the season!

Chris London is a guitarist songwriter and visual artist with a long established reputation for his ability, style, and feel. Residing in Northeast Pennsylvania, London’s roots sprang from British Blues and classic Americana. London’s reputation music has taken him from Beale St. to Bourbon St., and points in between, since 1973.

Chris London’s first release, The Chris London Band First American Album, Music Head Magazine said “A rock solid album, showcased by London’s fine guitar work, and his ability to turn a phrase”; Soundcheck magazine heralded the album as a future classic, “which takes the listener off the interstate of musical cliches and down old musical highways at dangerous speeds”, Gallery Of Sound ”By far one of the most eclectic and imaginative local releases in a long time”. And the legendary Cesar Diaz, who wrote the liner notes, states “Infectious. A great taste of London style blues, Chris and the boys take the blues, throw in some hot sauce and peppers and turn out totally nuclear chili!” Chris’s follow up release, Night Out, was noted forits “expert songwriting, funny with insight, "She Just Knows" is a masterpiece.” The title track has appeared as numerous times as theme music for commercials and internet radio.

Chris London has played regularly with The Friar’s Point Band, since 2006. As the primary songwriter, Chris and the band released several albums of blues-rock originals, including “to The Point”, “Live at Sun Studios”, and “Lust”, a conceptual collection of London’s blues originals, which won the LVBN best blues album. Their 19 song original release “At This Point”, received rave reviews. The Morning Call saying “The vox are powerful and hold the listener hostage. The solos kick royal A**! I give this my highest rating, a FORCE 5!”

2020 saw London releasing 2 albums, The Bonswaado Brothers “Ain’t Got No Time”, and Chris London Songs and Guitar, 12 concept lyric videos supporting 25 years of The First American Album, and several video singles supporting Songs And Guitar. Chris London’s rock and roll quest enters its six decade, performing throughout the Northeast PA region by himself or with someone else, or with The Chris London Band, or with Friar’s Point Band.

Festivities begin at 11 AM at Veteran's Park
with a Patriotic commemoration.

The park is located just east of Veteran's Bridge which
separates Stroudsburg from East Stroudsburg.

The Celebration continues with an
Opening Ceremony at Dansbury Depot
just north of Crystal Street at 12 PM.

Contents of the 50 year time capsule will be on display along
with actors in period costumes, speakers and dignitaries.
There'll be plenty of food and goodies on hand as well!

Pictures taken at this Shoot Out and others throughout
the summer will be in a retrospective exhibit in November.

A major milestone is finally being commemorated in East Stroudsburg!

The borough’s 150th anniversary was postponed last year because of the pandemic. But organizers hope to use what was learned to honor their history. 150th East Stroudsburg Sesquicentennial Committee Cochair Maury Molin says, "The theme is being flexible and tolerant, and bringing unity to bring this all together. We’ve planned a "150th+1 celebration" to make sure the borough being incorporated in 1870 receives the recognition it deserves."

Molin continues, "That’s the reason why we want to celebrate it. I think it’s a time people are looking for something to do. We want to acknowledge the past, look at the present and look to the future."

The celebration kicks off on May 29th at 11am with a Memorial Day service at Veterans Park. Festivities will then move to the Dansbury Depot at noon for an opening ceremony which will feature revealing the contents of the time capsule buried in front of Borough Hall in 1970, various speakers and dignitaries, a Victorian Couple doing a skit, and 150th Anniversary cookies.

Events continue through October building on the theme of 150 + 1. Molin relates, "When we reseal the new capsule, will be the 150th+1 day," and concludes with this mathematical thought, “Give 150 seconds to 150 minutes and 150 days as you celebrate the sesquicentennial this year."

Local businesses are also putting their own twist on the theme. Jimmy’s Ice Cream presenting a 150th flavor and Pocono Cinema holding a 150th movie series. Pocono Cinema President Courtney Tolino says, "We’re doing movies through the ages starting with 'It's a Mad, Mad World' from the 60s and then moving on to each decade thereafter. The 70's blockbuster 'Jaws' will be the second feature. The movies will show once a month at a reduced cost. After such an uncertain year, we’re told this celebration is exactly what’s needed."

Tolino continues, "We’re really excited, not just to partner with East Stroudsburg in celebrating the 150th anniversary, but because that’s something we’ve always done with different organizations. We're glad to see people coming back out into the community."

PPC has been recognized as an organization that gives back and likes to encourage our community at large with the photos we take, so it was no surprise when the planners of East Stroudsburg's 150th celebration reached out to see if we'd help them record the year's events. To that end the Executive Committee decided to incorporate our Shoot Outs with the events planned in the coming months.

Have you been looking for opportunities to explore photojournalism, street or portrait photography? Maybe you've thought about exploring human Interest or classic car photos?
This is your chance to expand your horizons and have a good time too! Most events will be held outdoors with plenty of space. We'll keep you informed on details as the events take place.

Van Campen Inn

Shoot out at Van Campen Inn

May 8, 2021 - 2 PM to 4 PM

Van Campen Inn is in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area on the New Jersey side of the park.

The Inn (or more accurately the old "yaugh" house (look it up: https://www.noonmarkantiques.com/blog/2020/5/26/what-is-a-laugh) is located on Old Mine Road (great history here) right next to the Old Military Road (yet more history). The Inn is maintained by the Walpack Historical Society and would have a docent on duty in the Inn but for the pandemic. But hopefully soon. But we cannot go in while we are there this time. The Inn is a beautiful stone house dating back to the 1740's. Nearby is the Military Road Trail and the Shapanack Cemetery, which date back to the 1700's as well. The area of the river is known as the Shapanack Flats.

There is parking for 5 or 6 cars before you will have to park up the road a bit, so for the area there is parking, but it is limited.

I will have a homemade map of the area for those who want to explore further this area, too. You should be able to find some Scavenger Hunt shots and some Friends of DWGNRA calendar contest shots!

Warning: Old Mine Road is narrow and gravel at this point, and it will take quite a bit of time getting there. Also, it is tick season, so bring your bug spray. The cemeteries (there are actually 3 in the area) do require some hiking as does the Military Road Trail if you take it all the way to Walpack Center (uphill both ways). But the area is beautiful and pretty undisturbed, so beware of bears and other animals.

Directions:

So if you are ready for the adventure, here's how you get there. I do not suggest coming up Old Mine Road from I-80 or even up route 94 in New Jersey unless you live there.

- Take US 209 to the Dingman's Ferry Bridge into New Jersey.

- Watch for a road to the right soon after crossing the bridge, it will be marked with a sign for Peters Valley ->, take that road. It is a very sharp right.

- Follow the road all the way to Peters Valley, do not turn on the dirt/gravel Old Mine Rd just yet, as it will not go through (private property has closed a section).

- At Peters Valley turn right onto Kuhn Rd (street sign is posted) and take that to the end.

- It ends at Old Mine Road again, turn left. And go until you find the Van Campen Inn. It's very slow going here.

Van Campen Inn is only 6 or 7 miles from Dingmans Ferry, but it will take you 20-30 minutes, especially when you don't know the roads. If you come north from Blairstown or up Old Mine Road from I-80, you will go past Millbrook Village to the north and turn left at the T-intersection after crossing a decent size river (Flat Brook). Google maps will give good directions, too. Just put in Van Campen Inn (Old Mine Road, Layton, NJ).

A Shoot In that Spans the Country is on the Calendar!

It’s time to do some photo-sharing again! Last month we went on a Virtual Shoot Out entitled “Main Street in March” with the Shutterbugs of Roseville, California.

Now it’s time to take a look and see how all those pictures turned out. We’ll be meeting up on Zoom on with our California friends at a date/time to be announced. Prior to the meeting we’ll upload 1 to 3 of our Main Street pictures to a Dropbox link which will be provided in the near future. When your pictures come up during the meeting you’ll have an opportunity to share what drew you to take the shot, how it depicts Main Street to you, or any other aspect of the picture you’d like to share.

The Shutterbugs will also be sharing their shots with us. Like PPC the club is made up of photographers whose skills range from none to professional. Most of the members have joined so that they can learn more about their cameras and improve their photographic skills.

It’s going to be interesting to compare our photos and approaches from a bicoastal point of view. Watch your emails for the link to this meeting as the date draws closer

March Shoot Out

Main Street in March

Our Shoot Out this month is both virtual and on-site! It's also bi-coastal! We're teaming up with the Shutterbug Camera Club of Roseville, California, taking shots or our "Main Streets" and comparing the outcomes. Roseville is heading into Spring while we're still finishing up Winter so it should be interesting to see the differences.

PPC members also have the option of participating in our usual "virtual" format (the date and time is up to you), but the picture must be of a "Main Street, USA" (you can drive through Stroudsburg, East Stroudsburg or the main street of any town and take pictures from your car or you can use a shot from your archives if you can't get out and about)
OR
they can meet-up with Ann at Stroudsburg Foto on March 6, 2021 at 2 pm and walk up and down Main Street in search of a photo that shows our West Coast friends what Stroudsburg is like.

At the end of the month we'll collect all the photos and share them at our respective meetings. Once you've taken your Main Street photos, email 3-5 of them to Ann at Olivetreeann@mail.com.

The Covid virus has certainly limited the types of indoor Shoot Outs we can hold. The winter weather makes outdoor Shoot Outs a little “iffy”. So, we’re shifting Shoot Out gears this month and going indoors- but not together in the same place! Winter also tends to be a time when our creative juices slow down. Our “pho-jo” becomes a “no-go”. How do you combat the winter slump? Our Shoot Out/Shoot In is designed to help you jump-start your creativity. Join Ann on Feb. 12^th at 7 pm for an informal chat on rekindling your creativity. After the discussion we’ll take some time to show a current picture with fellow members (like snow shots from our recent storm) before closing out the evening. A Zoom link with further instructions will be sent out to the membership prior to the Shoot In. Want a head start? What Makes Your Heart Sing?

One of our favorite speakers, John Barclay, has often said during his presentations, “Photograph what makes your heart sing!” And this month’s virtual theme will challenge you to do just that. Our virtual shoot out themes are meant to be broad and open so that you have the freedom to pick and choose, when, where and what you’ll capture with your camera and how to interpret the theme as well. Keep your eyes open this month for images that truly speak to your heart. Will it be a loved one? Will it be a beautiful landscape? Or will it be something that sits on a table in your home that you’ve treasured for a long time? When you see it, take a shot! Post processing or sooc is up to you. Do you need a special day to set aside as a reminder? February 20^th will be Ann’s “Heart Day” and you can join her virtually in search of something that makes your heart sing. For those of you who are still staying close to home we now offer a "safe haven" shoot out to keep you "snapping". Our virtual Shoot Outs are designed to keep you safe and healthy at a comfort level that's best for you and we hope you'll join in the fun. While the weather in winter can range from sunny almost bearable temperatures to frost and blizzards our virtual shoot this month is designed to explore those variations and capture them in our cameras. This month you can take your time and shoot whenever you want or you can opt to "join" Ann on a specific day and take pictures then.

As with all our virtual Shoot Outs, you have the option to choose the day/s, the location, the subject and whether or not you'll post-process your shot. Then... Share your photos with the club! Email 1-5 shots to Ann at Olivetreeann@mail.com for the newsletter and monthly meeting slideshow.

Need a specific date so that you can remember to participate? Join Ann on January 9th as she takes her camera out to answer the question, "What does winter look like in my backyard?" and do the same in yours.

PPC returns to Bill's Old Bike Barn and Museum!

We enjoyed photographing Bill's massive collection of Americana items, vintage motorcycles, classic cars, and wooden carousel so much last year we decided to return! The museum is HUGE! So there's plenty of room to wander and photograph without being on top of one another.

The cost for this session is $10

(A tip from Bob Hare: the museum tends to be on the darker side for lighting. Tripods are allowed and he also recommends having a small light source such as a flashlight handy to help brighten up your subject when you want just a little more exposure.)

Directions to Bill's museum are fairly simple:

Bill's Old Bike Barn is located at 7145 Rt. 11 (Columbia Blvd.), Bloomsburg Pa. 17815. Take Rt. 80 West to exit 241. Entrance to the museum is next to Bill's Cycle Shop on Rt. 11, just minutes off the highway. The museum is behind the Bike Shop. According to Google it takes 1 hour and 17 minutes to get there.

This Shoot Out promises to be a lot of fun- so don't miss out!

As a Tamron Image Master he has had his articles and images published in many photo magazines for over 15 years. His Macro Photo Club online has over 2,000 members, from 18 countries. Mike also teaches workshops and speaks at photo conferences throughout the US.

PPC is in for a treat on November 14 when Mike discusses the ins and outs of being a properly equipped macro photographer. It’s not just about the equipment, but also equipping yourself with the how-to knowledge of macro photography. Mike will cover the most important equipment for macro photography, how to control depth of field, a little about composition, and subject matter. PPC Returns to the Pohoqualine Fish Association

The Pohoqualine Fish Association property is one of the oldest fishing clubs in Monroe County. PPC explored one of its public trails in August. In November we’ll return to this beautiful area with its dense forest where McMichael’s Creek winds its way through Rhododendron bushes and deciduous trees but this time we will be gaining access to the area which is privately owned by the Pocono Heritage Land Trust. Access to this portion of the area is not open to the public, so if you enjoy landscape, wildlife or any other type of nature photography, you won’t want to miss this.

Time: 10 AM to 12:30 PM.

Directions to meet-up location:

We will be meeting up at the McMichaels Creek Camp Alice Picnic Area which is located on Rt. 715 off Rt. 209 North of Brodheadsville between the WaWa traffic light and McIllhaney where the PFA Clubhouse is located (Lat./Long. coordinates are 40°56’06” N / 75°23’31” W). The Woodland Trail is an initiative by Mt. Airy Resort and Casino in partnership with Paradise Township Environmental Advisitory Council and Monroe County for the residents and tourists of the Pocono Mountains. The 1.1 mile lightly trafficked loop trail takes you through a nice forest setting and follows a lovely stream. It's a great location to enjoy and capture the beautiful Fall colors of the Poconos. Join us for some fun in the Autumn sun on this month's Shoot Out.

Woodland Trail is located just across from the turn to go to the casino's main entrance on Rt. 611 N in Paradise Township/Mt. Pocono.

Minsi Lake Shoot Out

Minsi Lake is the largest lake in Northampton County. The 311 acre park surrounding the lake includes extensive woodlands and wetlands and the largest concentration of vernal pools in Pennsylvania. The Lake had been drained for two years to rebuild the earthen dam. Refilling began in late 2019 and is still in progress. Much of the lake more resembles wetlands currently.

PPC will meet up at the west shore parking lot before heading out on one of two trails. The Lake Trail is about two miles long and runs through the woods around the north side of the lake, connecting the east and west shore parking lots. The Dam Trail is paved and a little over one and a half miles long and travels through the west shore picnic area coming to an end at the spillway at the east end of the dam. Recent restoration work on the dam is making a positive impact on the environment. From wildlife to landscapes there’ll be plenty to photograph here. Neither trail is difficult but the Lake Trail could be wet and muddy so dress accordingly.

Directions from the Stroudsburg area: take Rt. 191 south to Fox Gap Rd. on the left. Turn left and follow Fox Gap Rd. to Quaker Plain Rd. Turn left on to Quaker Plain Rd. (T726), then right on to Blue Mountain Dr. (T707). Turn left on to Lake Minsi Dr. (T797).

It’s easy to get used to photographing our subjects from the same position every time we pick up the camera. This month we’ll challenge ourselves to shoot from a new angle or a different level. Billed as one of, if not the oldest fishing club in Monroe County, the Pohoqualine Fish Association has now become a part of the Pocono Heritage Land Trust. PPC will enjoy its second outdoor Shoot Out this year on this interesting property which now has almost 800 acres of land and a good portion of McMichael’s Creek protected through a conservation easement. The Shoot Out will take place on August 22, 2020. Our guide for the afternoon will be Matt Schultz of the PHLT and he’ll walk us through trails that wind through beautiful woods and alongside the headwaters of the fish association.

The Pohoqualine Fish Association is located on Hypsie Gap Road, Long Pond/Stroudsburg PA., 18360 approximately 20 miles away from the Outlets in Tannersville in a densely wooded area.

Monochrome photos are typically thought of as either black and white or sepia. But this month we'll put a patriotic twist on the genre and choose one of the colors in our flag as our inspiration. It's up to you as to the time of day you shoot your picture, the color you'll use and whether or not to enhance it in post processing. You can do one picture or several- again the choice is yours. Let's see how you feature one color as the central theme of your picture. Monroe County moved into the Green Zone on June 19, 2020 opening the way for PPC to resume outdoor gatherings which maintain safe distancing. Plans are in the works for an outdoor Shoot Out on July 25, 2020 at spacious Rolling Hills Farm. The garlic harvest will be in full swing and there maybe some blueberries on the bush. There'll be plenty of room for us to spread out and photograph the crops, the pond and the barns. We're looking forward to seeing everyone again!! As mobility restrictions placed on us by the pandemic continue, our virtual shoot outs will also continue. Last month's virtual Shoot Out was an opportunity to see your environment from a new perspective. This month we're getting a little personal!

Everyone has one- you know what we're talking about- that one drawer where you toss all those little doo-dads you don't want to throw out just yet... Well, this is their month to shine! Keep them in the drawer, take them out of the drawer, take a shot of all of them or maybe one or two. Photographer Morley Baer says you can transform an ordinary object by photographing it, so this month we'll prove his statement to be true!

Once you've captured 1 to 3 shots you're satisfied with you have the option of sending them in as is, or processing them in whatever way you choose. Just like the time you take the shot, the processing is up to you. When you're ready to share your photos send them to Ann at Olivetreeann@mail.com. We'll post the Shoot Out results in next month's newsletter and show them as a slide show during the June meeting.

A Virtual Shoot Out Adventure

Social distancing can’t stop PPC from a monthly Shoot Out. We’ve come up with a creative way to share a shot with your fellow members while staying in your “safe haven”. We're taking this month's Shoot Out into the virtual realm!

Based on the World Wide Photo Minute which takes place every year on March 15^th at 6:47 pm, we’ll set aside April 18^th as the date we pick up the camera and capture whatever we see before us. There is no specific time set though so that you can shoot whenever it fits your schedule on that day. And to add a little fun into the mix, we’ll combine our Shoot Out with a game called “From Where I Stand” which involves grabbing your camera and taking 10 to 40 steps in a direction of your choice (depending on how much space you have). You can take your picture indoors or outdoors- it’s up to you.

Pick a spot to start from then take the 10-40 steps in one direction. Now take a shot of what you see. Some folks like to include their feet in the shot; others prefer to look straight ahead and shoot the scenery, the people, or their pets- whatever is in front of their camera. Once you’ve taken your shot you can either upload it directly (sooc) or process your photo then send it to Ann at Olivetreeann@mail.com- again the choice is yours. Ann will collect the pictures and put them in next month’s newsletter so that everyone can see all the places we went on our virtual Shoot Out. We will also be featuring the pictures on our website and in a slide show during our May meeting. We’re hoping a lot of you join in!

The American Ribbon Factory

Most of us are familiar with the ground floor of this historical building for its arts and crafts materials but many do not know that there is a small amount of production still taking place on its upper level. PPC has been invited for a very special shoot out of the machinery and ribbons. While the factory will not be in operation on Saturday, many of the machines are set up with colorful thread, ready to resume production on Monday.

Built in the era of the Titanic and Henry Ford's Model T the Castle Inn was the last of the great resorts to be established in the Delaware Water Gap borough which saw over 500,000 visitors per year at the turn of the 20th century. PPC will be given access to wander through parts of the Inn which are not normally open to the public. We'll meet in the shopping area between Zoe's Ice Cream and Donna McCartney's frame shop then head off into rooms where we'll have plenty of time to photograph some of the collectibles, antiques and beautiful architecture.

The Annual Ice Harvest at Millbrook Pond

The Tobyhanna Millpond Ice Harvest will be held on Saturday January 25, 2020. Sawing the ice starts around 9:00 am and cutting continues until approximately 2:00 pm. All are welcome to help cut ice, guide the ice cakes to the icehouse ramp, or just enjoy watching. PPC will be on hand to capture the events in our cameras for this month’s Shoot Out. The event is organized by the Leonard/Saxe families with financial support from the Coolbaugh Township Historical Association. For updates on the ice conditions you can call the Ice Harvest Hotline at 570-894-8205. Millpond #1 is located at 646 Lakeside Dr., Tobyhanna, Pa.

PPC will meet at 9 AM with or without ice to photograph the museum and demonstration of ice harvesting. Bundle up and grab your gear for some historic fun!

2020 WRAP-UP

With freezing rain, sleet, snow, and 30 mph winds on January 25, we were unable to harvest ice or even have a demonstration of tools and equipment! We suspect that even the old timers, a century ago, would have spent the day working inside, tending to the ice harvesting tools and equipment.

We did manage to harvest two cakes of 5” thick ice on Friday as we were preparing for the event. Special thanks to the folks that came by and helped in the preparations and lay-out of the field for the harvest that didn’t happen.

Hopefully we’ll have better luck next year. Mark your calendars for January 30, 2021. We’ll send out a post about the harvest in late 2020. Thank you for your interest in the history of the ice harvesting industry.

November Shoot Out
Bill's Old Bike Barn

In a wooded grove on the hill behind his parts shop, Bill Morris began to fulfill his life long dream and established Bill's Old Bike Barn in 1998. Years later he has collected close to 200 amazing vintage motorcycles in a 55,000 square ft building filled with some of the most extraordinary antiques from all around the world. The museum is in a constant state of evolution as new items and collections are added regularly. You'll be able to photograph classic vehicles such as the 1939 German Kattenkrad, 1913 Harley Silent Grey Fellow, and 1914 Triumph. The museum is also home to vintage European carousel horses and Bill's 1939 New York Worlds Fair memorabilia. A small village, "Billville", is constructed inside the building, complete with mock mansion, smoke shop, music store and our 1939 New York Worlds Fair Bar. From military displays, vintage riding clothing, thousands upon thousands of posters and pieces of memorabilia, from John Wayne to John Deere and everything in between, there is something for everyone to photograph at Bill's Old Bike Barn.

The museum will be open exclusively for PPC members to photograph at our leisure. Tripods are allowed. The cost of the session is $10 per person.

Bill's Old Bike Barn is located at 7145 Rt. 11 (Columbia Blvd.), Bloomsburg Pa. 17815. The directions are quite simple: Take Rt. 80 West to exit 241. Entrance to the museum is next to Bill's Cycle Shop on Rt. 11, just minutes off the highway. The museum is behind the Bike Shop. According to Google it takes 1 hour and 17 minutes to get there.

My role as leader will be to point you in the right direction for the kind of photos you want to take or share a pointer or two on composition and share ideas for photographs if you need them. Take a stroll around the lovely grounds of Grey Towers, home to one of Pennsylvania's former governors and the first director of the U. S. Forest Service, Gifford Pinchot, and you'll know why it became one of the first homes to be designated as a national historic site. Get ready for a delightful ride through some “local” history on July’s Shoot Out. Ken Winham has picked the Electric Trolley Museum as our next destination and it looks like there’ll be plenty of great photo opportunities between the displays and actual trolleys.

The museum is located on the Steamtown National Historic Site grounds in downtown Scranton. Admission to the late 19^th c. mill building which serves as the home for numerous interactive exhibits and displays is $6 for adults/$5 for seniors (62+). But if you really want to participate in the full trolley experience the combo admission for the museum and a trolley ride is $10/$9 respectively. The 45 minute ride covers 5 ½ miles over the Roaring Brook and through Scranton in a vintage trolley.

So pack your cameras and a bag lunch and plan to meet at the Lowe’s in Bartonsville on Saturday, July 13, 2019 at 9:30 AM if you’d like to carpool. We should arrive at the Trolley Museum by 11 AM if you’d rather meet there.

Located in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreational Area, Zimmermann Farm was the family home of renowned metalsmith Marie Zimmermann (1879-1972). The farm was purchased by her family in 1882 and their original farmhouse still stands. A second home was built in the early 1900’s and Marie’s artistic acumen is evidenced in the Breton influenced Dutch Colonial style house. A graduate of Pratt Institute, Marie’s abilities were in high demand between 1920 and 1930 but pressure from the government in 1940 to keep better track of the precious metals and gems she used caused Marie to sell her New York brownstone and finally settle down permanently at the farm.

Along with Marie’s beautiful home, the property also includes a German barn and beautiful gardens. The Friends of Marie Zimmerman volunteers will also be on hand to answer questions and give tours of the house. This shoot out is a great opportunity to collect pictures to submit for our calendar project with the Friends of the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, so don't miss out on this excellent opportunity!

Directions to Zimmermann Farm:

Take Rt. 209 N to the intersection with Rt. 739. Continue through the traffic light and proceed 1.7 mi. Zimmermann Farm Rd. will be on your left between mile marker 14 and 15 on Rt. 209 N. The gate will be open and there should be signage showing you the way. Park near the barns.

Dusk is the perfect time to capture birds and other animals. The Forever Green Nature Reserve was once the golf course for the Penn Hills Estate. It is now home to several eagles and other birds who enjoy the open, green space. Since the days are longer we'll have plenty of time to capture these magnificent birds and the natural beauty of the flowers and trees that make up a part of their habitat.

Historical Millbrook Village

Millbrook Village was once a bustling center of business when the Van Campens ran their mill there. It is no longer functioning but thanks to dedicated volunteers it remains a popular tourist stop in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. Our Shoot Out will give you the opportunity to explore both nature and architecture as we wander around the grounds. It is also a chance to collect some photos for the calendar project coming in July. So get out your cameras and join in the fun.

APRIL SHOOT OUT #2

The Schisler Museum is the only museum of its kind in the Pocono region. Located on the campus of ESU it houses several displays depicting the Frozen North, The Cold Forest, Canyon Country, the Verdant East and the African Bush. Ducks, deer, and insects complete the collection. The museum hopes to inspire wonder, provide an up-close and personal view into the natural world that one does not normally get to see and to instill an understanding of how humans both interact with our world and help to preserve it.

Our private shoot out at the museum will allow us to photograph the displays without interruption from other patrons. Tripods will be allowed during our visit. So get your camera and gear ready for a great experience

A Special Visit To the Gorge and Middle Falls

Sunday, April 14th - 1:00 PM

This is a special nature walk led by Don Miller, PHLT Naturalist. Don will lead us into the heart of our Cranberry Creek Preserve - specifically the gorge and middle falls area, a more remote, less visited area of the Preserve. This is a hardier walk with steeper terrain and off trail walking that is best done with the leaves off of the trees. While it can be done even with snow on the ground, deep snow makes it even more strenuous, but also far more beautiful.

Don is leading this walk for PHLT and PPC members into this area of the Preserve.

Last minute update from walk leader Don Miller:

Yes, the Cranberry Creek Walk is still on for Sunday at 1:00, although it may be a bit rainy. We are still going to hold the walk. I was in a few days ago and the stream and the falls are in their full spring glory.

Always room for PPC Members on our PHLT Walks. There are 22 people pre-registered, but the forecast for rain may chase some of these folks away.

So, bring your rain slicker, waterproof hiking boots and wet weather covers for the cameras. It would be great to have you and others from PPC join us on the walk into PHLT’s Cranberry Creek Nature Preserve.

We will be meeting by 1:00 in the Paradise Price Preserve parking lot (where we met before) on Henry’s Crossing Road. Just please advice PPC Members that the tunnel on Rt. 191 is closed, so you must use an alternate route to get there.

From East Stroudsburg take the Rt. 447 detour from North of Analomink to the Clark Road/Snowhill Road intersection. Turn left on Clark Road, travel to interaction with Henry’s Crossing Road, turn left and enter Paradise Price Preserve parking area on left about 1 mike from Clark Road, just before crossing the railroad tracks.

From Stroudsburg or other areas of the County, it’s best to take Rt. 611 North, turn right at traffic light on Woodland Road past Mt. Airy. Take Woodland Road to Rt. 940, turn right at the light in Paradise Valley on Rt. 940 East. Travel East through Paradise Valley to the detour signs just before the Crescent Lodge. Turn left on Rt. 390, travel uphill less than a mile, turn right on Cranberry Road, travel to intersection with Henry’s Crossing Road, turn left and travel about 1 mile, cross railroad tracks and turn right into Paradise Price Preserve parking lot.

Discover a few of Middle Smithfield's hidden gems, the Schoonover Farm on Community Drive in Middle Smithfield Township. Take Route 209 N to River Dr. (Turkey Hill, the Warehouse Grill and the former Fernwood Resort are on the corners). Turn right on to River Rd. Community Dr. will be on the left BEFORE you get to the Park Headquarters and Hidden Lake Dr. Turn left on to Community Dr. and follow the narrow lane for less than a mile. You'll see an old farmhouse with a parking area on the left and the red barn on the right. Another barn is just a little bit up the road. You can also park at the headquarters and walk McDade Trail to the barn if you want.

February PHLT Shoot Out

Pomeroy McMichaels Creek Nature Preserve

Despite frigid temperatures, we had a good turnout at for the Shoot Out and nature walk conducted by Don Miller, Naturalist and PHLT Board Member.

It was a great opportunity to get out in the fresh air, learn, socialize and, of course, take a lot of pictures. The best of these images will be made available to Don and the PHLT for Trust useage.

PHLT recently closed on a 70+ acre tract on the McMichaels Creek in the vicinity of Stroud Township's Glenbrook Country Club. This preserve is officially named the Pomeroy McMichaels Creek Nature Preserve which includes a very photogenic stretch of McMichaels Creek making it a beautiful property to explore and photograph with some easier winter access than our Cranberry Creek Preserve. Access here is on level ground and is a relatively short hike. Don Miller plans to lead this hike/shoot out.

Pomeroy McMichaels Creek Nature Preserve (PHLT Photo)

The Pomeroy McMichaels Creek Nature Preserve, named in honor of the 3 generations of the Pomeroy family who owned the property, is a 70+ acre piece of land containing a pristine secion of the McMichaels Creek in Hamilton Township.

Located between Hickory Valley and Turkey Hill and connecting the Glenbrook/Hickory Valley and Turkey Hill/Quiet Valley greenway areas, a newly protected natural area has been added to this McMichaels Creek greenway corridor. With this recent acquisition that was decades in the making, Pocono Heritage Land Trust has added over 70 acres of newly preserved greenway landscape to this beautiful and interesting geologic ecotone of the McMichaels Creek valley.

This newly protected piece of a large scale ecotone, this transition zone between Pocono and Cherry Creeks watersheds,this wild natural landscape influenced by glacial till and limestone (calcareous) ledges, is now finally permanently protected piece of property along the beautiful McMichaels Creek.

Classic Car Shoot Out

We’re in for a treat at this month’s Shoot Out with an array of beautiful classic cars on display just for PPC! Deborah and William Whitman’s collection includes an MG Midget, Morris Minor 1000 Traveler and a Fiat Roadster so be sure to mark your calendars for this one. The Shoot Out will take place on Sunday, October 14, 2018 (rain date October 21). Members will meet up at the home of Susan Field, 210 Beverly Lane, Stroudsburg, PA. 18360, at 2:30 pm for a shuttle to the Whitman’s home as parking is very limited there.

Acquired in 2012-2013 the preserve features the best of the "Old Poconos" with its step waterfalls, braided creek, hemlock ravines, Rhododendron stands and open woodlands.

Early Fall on the McDade Trail

There's no question about it. Fall brings out the best of nature in the Poconos. This month's Shoot Out will get us out and about, discovering the early signs of this beautiful season. We'll meet up at the Egypt Mills Parking area on Rt. 209 N (on the right just past Egypt Mills Rd.) and wander along McDade Trail capturing the fading glory of wildflowers and other signs of the season. A short excursion from the trail brings us to a babbling brook to capture reflections and the gracefully floating leaves upon the water.

Kurmes Paradise Creek Nature Preserves consists of 400 acres intersected by Rt. 940 in the Mt. Pocono area. A mixture of Hemlocks, Rhododendrons, Mountain Laurel and Oaks with vernal pools and two waterways, Kurmes offers beautiful photo opportunities for all photographers. Walking sticks are not necessary but helpful, but you will definitely want to wear wet-weather footwear after all the rain we've been having. We'll have the unique advantage of learning more about the fauna and flora with naturalist Don Miller along as our personal guide. To get to the Devil's Hole parking area for our meet-up you will want to take Rt. 940 to Devil's Hole Rd. The entrance to the parking area is well-marked with a PHLT kiosk and sign. Follow the gravel road to the parking area. Limited spaces so car pooling is advised.

Golden Hour Shoot Out at Holy Cow Farm
PPC will head down to Bangor for this month's Shoot Out to wander through the fields of flowers at Holy Cow Farm. Owners Jenn and Bryan McAtee bought the 45 acre farm in 2016, fulfilling a long-time dream of theirs. We'll enjoy photographing the flowers while the sun is casting a golden glow across the fields. Please be advised the driveway to the farm is bumpy and rocky- after all it's a farm! We'll also be parking in a grassy field so be prepared for that as well. As with all our Shoot Outs photographers are responsible for themselves and their equipment.

PPC will be setting up "shop" at the opening day of the Monroe County Farmer's Market. Along with our pop-up art gallery and display tent, we'll have a small set-up for portraiture. We'll be collecting both formal and candid shots of patrons and vendors for the Market website. The market is also a great place to shoot still-lifes, street shots and buy the best local produce. And don't forget the Scavenger Hunt will still be on so you may find a few photos for some of those categories too. Wreaths Across America is observed annually on the third Saturday of December. It was begun in 1992 by Morrill Worcester of Harrington, Me. and in 2007 it became a non-profit organization. What started in Arlington National Cemetery now takes places at cemeteries in all 50 states. Christmas wreaths are placed at the graves of all veterans so that they will be remembered and honored for the sacrifices they made to preserve our freedoms. This event is being sponsored by the Patriot Guard Riders, a U. S. based internet organization whose members attend the funerals of fallen soldiers, fire fighters and police when invited by the deceased's family, serve in honor guards at military funerals, fill in the ranks at burials of indigent and homeless veterans, greet returning troops, and volunteer in different veterans' organizations. This will be a very moving experience for us to see and photograph.

A Self-guided Tour
Meet at 9 AM in Lowe's Parking Lot

Did you know that America's first covered bridge was constructed in Pennsylvania?
It was built across the Schuykill River and connected Philadelphia with the west.

The tour covers 7 bridges: Bogert's Bridge, Manasses Guth Bridge, Wehr's Covered Bridge, Rex's Covered Bridge, Geiger's Covered Bridge, Schlicher's Covered Bridge, and Kreidersville Covered Bridge. The route is approximately 50 miles long and is a leisurely 2 hour drive. Once we divide ourselves among cars we'll proceed to the beginning of the tour at Center Square in Allentown. There is a picnic area at Wehr's Bridge where we'll stop for lunch so bring a sandwich along.
